What is the best thing to clean hardwood floors with?

I am renting a place that was built in 1912, it has the original hardwood floors in it. The clear coating I guess its sealer has flaked off in quit a few spots. What would be the best thing to clean the floor with that would be safe for my animals. Ive worked in an old building that I had to clean the floors with vinegar and water but it left it dull looking. Any suggestions Thanks
