How and what should I use to make my brick wall shiny ?

My apartment has real brick walls. The previous owner paint something on the brick walls that makes it look shiny and somewhat waxy. I want to use the same material or do the same thing with the brick wall in the other bedroom. I tried the Thomspon's Water Seal, polyurethane (clear gloss), and even the outdoor brick and concrete sealer. None of them makes it look shiny and waxy. I wonder what the previuos owner use. Please help !
